Capsule Monster Coliseum is the first game in the series, which starts with a new premise based on Capsule Monsters, an original idea by Kazuki Takashima, a staff member from Tatsunoko Productions.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monster Coliseum offers a large amount of content, some of which is restricted to certain regions. For example, in the Japanese version, the player is limited to using only the first generation of the Capsule Monsters in their campaigns, even though the second generation is available in the PSP version.

Although the game supports both the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable, the PSP version was released only in Japan. The PC version was the first Yu-Gi-Oh! game to be released in the PAL region and is currently available in Europe and Australasia.
