But two years later, he's back in Texas, playing for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter.
It's the first time in the show's history a fighter who won a gold medal at the world championships as a professional MMA fighter has won the reality show. It could also be Kocher's final run on TUF before he tries to get back to the UFC.
Kocher (5-0) looks to get back in the Octagon after a loss in his pro debut to Marcio Cruz. Since then, he's racked up an impressive 4-0 record, including 2-0 over the past two years. His last fight was a unanimous decision loss in the TUF live finale.
"It feels good to be back home again and finally get a chance to fight in front of my family and friends," Kocher said in an interview with MMAFighting.com. "So, I'm ready to get back in there and keep the same game plan."
Kocher says that he'd like to fight at UFC 157 in Houston on May 24, but said he's also open to competing on the big stage of the UFC.
"I am coming in to fight whoever they put in front of me," he said. "I just want to get in the cage and keep building on my record. I'd like to make a quick name for myself on this show, and see where that goes."
Kocher said he's been working hard on both his ground game and wrestling in the past two years and has shown improvement since his last fight.
"I've been keeping in shape, but I've been making some changes to my wrestling," 0b46394aab
