Internet Explorer for Mac was Microsoft's free web browser designed to run on Mac computers. While you can still download Internet Explorer for Mac from this page, it is important to note that the product is no longer supported by Microsoft.
However, if you really can't help yourself and are an Internet Explorer nostalgic, you might want to try it for a trip down memory lane. However, for normal internet browsing we'd really discourage you from using it. We couldn't even render the Softonic website in it and indeed, most websites failed to load properly. Internet Explorer for Mac is incredibly slow, buggy, prone to crashes and freezing and is woefully short of security settings.
Terry, there is an alternate approach to running Internet Explorer 11 on a Mac and I think it is easier to implement than the virtual machine method. It uses a free service from Microsoft and works quite well, you can use it with Microsoft Edge browser too.
Hi, I downloaded and installed all 3 version of IE. I need to start and stop IE from the command line as part of my automated testing process, via ant, maven, node.js. To be specific I am trying to have my Testacular Server start and stop IE. So my question is how can I start up these IE browsers from my mac via the command line?
Works perfectly with os 10.8.3 on my brand new iMac. Followed instructions above (went to the downloads links for the most current version) and it work flawlessly with no lag. I have a vendor portal that I have to log into for my business and the portal only works with IE8. This solved my problem for free!
I recently upgraded my VirtualBox to version 4.1.18 and the IE9 box I downloaded stopped working. I forgot to copy down the error code, but I proceeded to remove IE9.vbox and all related files and re-download the version.
I am no computer expert and I am stuck. I have successfully installed Virtual Box and thought I have fully downloaded the IE9 from the terminal. I left my mac to continue downloading as it appears that it would take a few hours. However, it downloaded all the rar2-7s fully but the first rar01.exe
Ok, so everything went fine on the download but as others have said, when I try to start IE is says it is expired. I read that it is supposed to say that and I just need to start the snapshot over again. How do I do that exactly?
I think I have to assume that something went wrong with my download, since the installation did not take place automatically. If I just do it again, I may have better luck. But without knowing why it went wrong I may be just futilely repeating hours of downloading over and over.
I thought I followed the guidelines exactly but I cannot create a new VM. It says I need a boot disc or other bootable media. I thought that was part of the download, but I do not know how to access it for the initial use wizard. Do you know what I am doing wrong?
Terminal was downloading part 2 of the IE7 overnight, it was at 248 of 700 MB when I went to bed, working fine. I have a slower internet connection so I knew it would take hours, perhaps days. This morning, it had stopped.
Tried re-entering the script into Terminal, both into a new terminal window & the window which had downloaded part 1. It looked like it was unpacking part 1, software permissions appeared, then it said:
1. Curl was not installed. Easy fix: sudo apt-get install curl2. The script tried to download a nonexistent version of the Oracle Extension Pack, and failed almost immediately. I had to download it and install it manually. I used this: _VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.2-73507.vbox-extpack (as of this writing, Ubuntu 11.10 uses version 4.1.2 of virtualbox, if installed from apt-get)
Great Reply! Although many users do not understand why someone would want to instal internet explored on their mac, but as web designers and testers, this one is a must. I am going to try to download as you specified above! Thank you for the post!
If Safari is not your first browser of choice and using Internet Explorer for Mac is at the very least quite complicated, you can download any other stable and widely used browser out there and make it the default one on your macOS.

Utilize the scripts noted in the OS X Daily article Internet Explorer for Mac the Easy Way: Run IE 7, IE8, & IE9 Free in a Virtual Machine to download, convert and install Microsoft's free IE Testing VMs to be used on VirtualBox.
Virtualization is definitely the way to go. There's VirtualBox as mentioned above, which is a free open source project. There are also two commercial offerings, Parallels and VMWare Fusion. Both of those have free trials so you can evaluate what might work best.
If you're wondering why to pay when VirtualBox is free, Parallels and Fusion are both commercially developed and supported software. If you run into problems, you can get help, rather than spend time searching for answers yourself. Additionally, VirtualBox is cross-platform, so it has fewer Mac niceties, and it's more of a DIY product - no quick setup or anything.
Just thought I would add to this as I just found a great new free tool to view IE on a mac. Download "Sauce" from the mac app store. I have been using Virtualbox the last two years and this is much easier to install, doesn't have huge VM files, and the interface is much smoother. Sauce also has the ability to preview in IE 10 (which is complete crap). There is also another cloud based app called browser stack. Tried the free version and the interface is nice but it does cost some $.
I don't have enough reputation to post a comment on @Anirvan's answer which helped me greatly. I'd just like to add that Rey Bango's blog which advocates for security reasons to set Windows Update to automatic causes a problem since IE gets auto-updated as well! MS has created separate auto-blockers for IE 9 through 11. I downloaded all the auto-blocker scripts and created a wrapper to call them on Dropbox. Extract the contents of the zip file and run IE9-11_blocker.cmd to block IE 9 through 11.

Whenever you download or launch a file, an antivirus program scans the file for malware. Most modern antivirus programs feature multiple scanning detection processes. The most basic detection process is known as specific detection. This is what most people think of when they think about how an antivirus works. Specific detection works by scanning a file for a specific set of characteristics and checking these characteristics against a known list of malware. This process is executed quickly and is an essential feature of an antivirus software, but it is also easy for cybercriminals to evade. Like a wanted outlaw in the old west, a cybercriminal can disguise a piece of malware to avoid detection. Modify the code slightly, and the malware is rendered undetectable.
