The good news is that Word for Mac has a built-in autosave feature called AutoRecover. This means that Word is quietly saving the document you are working on without you needing to manually tell the software to do so.
Excel automatically saves versions of the workbook at specified intervals, but only if you've made changes to your spreadsheet between these intervals. The name of each version has a date, time and the "(autosave)" note. When you click any of them, it will open along with the most current version of your workbook so that you can compare them and see all the changes.
Note. Excel deletes all previously autosaved versions when you close the document. If you want to look at the previous version again, it is better to create a backup copy of your data. How to save a backup copy of your workbookExcel's Auto Backup is a very useful feature that can help you retrieve a previously saved version of your workbook. Saving a backup copy can protect your work if you accidentally save changes that you do not want to keep or delete the original file. As a result, you will have the current saved information in the original workbook and all previously saved information in the backup copy.
Another very popular cloud storage service is Dropbox. It keeps snapshots of every change in your Dropbox folder over the last 30 days. So even if you saved a bad change, or if the file has been damaged or deleted, you can restore the document to an older version with only a few clicks. Dropbox doesn't work so closely with Microsoft Office as OneDrive, but it is so simple that everybody can master it.

Just reposting what other user posted earlier in the comments thread, to give it visibility for newcomers: if the autosaved file doesn't appear in the locations specified, Excel may have automatically deleted it when the software was closed. If so, it can be found in the Recycle Bin!

Computer crash and power failure occur frequently and unexpectedly. If you happen to be working hard on an Excel workbook but forget to save it in time when Excel stops working; or if you accidentally close the file without saving it, it would be a big tragedy. But, thankfully, Microsoft Excel has built-in AutoSave and AutoRecover features which can help you avoid losing important data. We will also introduce a professional data recovery that can help you out when Excel's built-in features fail to work recover excel files that are not saved. A good habit of saving Excel files on time and preparing a backup copy will also work to your advantage.
With AutoSave, another built-in feature of Microsoft Excel, a newly created excel file can be saved automatically in a preset interval. Even if users forget to save the file, they will not totally lose it when something goes wrong.
Like AutoRecover, AutoSave is turned on by default in Excel, and it also allows users to define the interval of auto saving and the location of the saved excel file. Once you close Excel documents without saving, the first thing that you should do when reopen Excel is to recover unsaved Excel files from AutoSave folder where the temporary excel files are stored.
Though AutoSave is a very useful function, like all the other built-in features, it does not work well all the time. In fact, we have heard users complain from time to time that, even though they have seen the taskbar shows that Excel auto-saved their file many times, they have no luck in getting the latest saved version. That would be a nightmare if your efforts devoted to work are in vain. But, don't be upset or panicked, a professional data recovery, FonePaw Data Recovery, for example, can be your great help. The program can recover lost or deleted Excel files, word documents and more from your Windows computer. In just a few steps, you can have your lost excel file back.
When you find the lost Excel file, select it and click Recover, then it will be safely put back to your device. If your excels are corrupted but you still need them, this way also works to recover the corrupted excel files.

After a crash of Excel (for Mac 2016 15.24 on Mac OS X 10.11.5, folder not changed, autorecovery set to 10 minutes), I could not find the autorecovery file as above (might be for Excel for Mac 2011?).
So, I just had to hard crash excel after the rainbow wheel spun for ~30 Minutes. After 2 hours of work I finally completed one of those long, hard, repetitive, tedious series of tasks to fix/transform some data.
I just spent two hours on an excel file only to have excel crash before i saved it and lost my work. I am using MS Excel 97-2004 on a MacBook Pro and right now have to manually save all work. How can I set up MS Excel/Word/PPT to auto save every 10 minutes to my Business's Dropbox account? I want to be able to work without having to manually save my file every few minutes.
There isn't a way for Dropbox to do this but as I understand it there is an auto-save feature in Microsoft Excel. I believe most versions have this. Take a look at this article -us/article/use-autosave-and-autorecover-to-help-protect-your-files-in-...
If you're referring to auto-saving directly to your Dropbox account then it's very likely that Microsoft prevents that as a way to force OneDrive use. There are even topics on Microsoft's forums that discuss this, and the usual answer is to use OneDrive. However, the auto-save feature just needs a folder on your computer, and you can easily specify your local Dropbox folder. Any files that are auto-saved to the Dropbox folder are then synced like any other file would be. I have my local Dropbox specified as the auto-save location in Excel and it's never been an issue. 2b1af7f3a8
