The 2014 American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Awards, which were presented on March 19 at the Pasadena Convention Center, recognized the quartet as the Best Classical Instrumental Soloist, the Best Jazz Soloist, the Best Jazz Album, and the Best Classical Vocal Album.
In 2016, Shorter will record an album that will include both his compositions and those of his wife, the librettist Spalding, who has penned operas and books for children, including Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” and her own children’s book, “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” both of which won the Newbery Medal.
The quartet will celebrate its founding members with the quartet’s 50th anniversary in 2016, and in the fall, Shorter will perform “Wayne Shorter: Quartet 1971-2011” at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The Los Angeles performance will celebrate the quartet’s 25th anniversary and will feature the world premieres of an opera, “The Wild,” based on an unfinished novel by Spalding, and an unreleased Christmas carol written for Shorter by the composer John Tams.
